Joe Satriani Turns Teacher at WorkshopLive.com
SAN FRANCISCO, CA —(BUSINESS WIRE)—March 23, 2008 WorkshopLive.com (WL), the affiliate company of premier music education company, National Guitar Workshop, announced today that the first video lessons are in the “can” from their San Francisco studio recording sessions this week with guitar virtuoso, Joe “Satch” Satriani. The icon has decided to join WorkshopLive.com in its mission to deliver a new kind of music education using cutting-edge online technology and award-winning curriculum at a time when the industry needs it the most.

“This is a great new way for artists to reach out to their fans,” says Satriani. “I’ll be using this as a way to respond to the many questions I’m asked by my audiences. I’ll be giving lessons but also sharing with fans how I write my songs, what’s important to me -- content they won’t have access to anywhere else.”

When asked how he felt about Mr. Satriani agreeing to create educational opportunities with WorkshopLive.com, Dave Smolover, CEO of WorkshopLive.com said “Few artists have the relationship with their fans that Joe Satriani does. We’ve been very fortunate to work with Joe at our National Guitar Workshops in the past, so to be able to get even closer to his music, connect more fans to his artistry and go global with it is a real thrill.”

What sets WorkshopLive.com apart from the many other sites offering video guitar lessons is the company’s cutting-edge, award-winning Internet learning platform. The team will now work closely with Mr. Satriani to transcribe his lessons and prepare them for delivery in this exciting format, which includes an animated fretboard, printable chord charts, accurate and artist-approved animated tabs, a looping tool, left-handed views and much more.

Who’s That Guy with Satriani?
Joe’s sidekick in the SatchZone is the infamous Dave Martone, a WorkshopLive fave. He’s also been a popular National Guitar Workshop teacher since forever. Martone is an outstanding player in his own right, which is why Satch was so happy to work with him on his SatchZone lessons.

Martone has also played, hosted clinics or performed with 3 Doors Down, Steve Morse, Jennifer Batten, Paul Gilbert, Yngwie Malmsteen, Marty Friedman, Seymour Duncan, Greg Howe, and drum greats Chester Thompson, Mike Portnoy, Greg Bissonet and Gene Hoglan. His last record, "When the Aliens Come," was released by Lion Music in Europe with worldwide distribution. It has already made it up the charts at Guitar9.com as the top seller.

We caught up with Dave just prior to launching the SatchZone and asked him a few questions.

SZ: When we told Joe Satriani our idea about matching the two of you up for the SatchZone, he loved the idea. Tell us the story of how you two met.

DM: Joe was coming to Vancouver to record his Super Colossal album, and I know the manager at the recording studio. She sent Joe my DVD and some CDs, and I was invited to go in and participate in the recording of “Crowd Chant.” That was a really fun time, and Joe and I really hit it off.

SZ: What was the coolest thing about working with Satch on these lessons?

DM: Joe has been the most important influence on my playing for a long time. You know how it is when you finally get to meet someone you admire and they turn out to be really cool? It’s amazing. I’ve had the opposite experience, too…and meeting someone you idolize and finding out they’re a jerk is no fun. It ruins their music for you. But Joe was fantastic. It made me feel so much more respect for him. He made me feel comfortable and important; he valued my opinion. He’s a very funny guy, too, and the banter between the two of us between video takes was terrific.

SZ: You’re responsible for the order in which the SatchZone lessons are being published. You put Effects and Legato first. Why?

DM: Effects just seemed like a fun thing to do. Joe has so many sounds, and we’ve all come to expect great, strange, beautiful sounds from his tunes. I thought everybody would enjoy hearing Joe talk about effects. Legato…that one’s easy. The first thing that comes to mind for me when I think about Joe Satriani’s technique is legato. It’s a huge element of his style. We’ve got two amazing legato lessons for the SatchZone, so I thought, let’s start there, and Joe agreed.
